Does the Bible Have Errors In It?

Holy Bible
This is an important question today for the Christian Church. Christians have historically received the Bible as the Word of God. Since we believe God does not lie, this would mean that the Bible would be fully trustworthy and not full of errors.

Today, however, many people dispute this. Many people, and even many churches, see the Bible as primarily the word of man. They see it as a man-made product, and so they see it as inherently flawed and fallible.

Now, of course, we should not turn a blind eye to translation, transcription, or copying errors that have been introduced into some manuscripts in the manuscript tradition along the way. But with all the archeological research that has been done, there have been so many different manuscript copies found of the books of the Bible. Numerous scholars have cross-referenced these different manuscripts to find where such transcription errors were inserted into the manuscript tradition. Because of this, today, more than ever, we can have great confidence in the text of the Bible.

So the real question boils down to this. Is the Bible, as it was originally written, only a man-made product, inherently subject to error, as many today proclaim?

Or is it God’s own Word?

The Apostle Peter’s answer is this:

“No prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:20-21)

This is the answer we affirm as well. The Bible is God’s Word. God inspired human authors to record his Word. The product is thus both human and divine. Because of this, it is fully trustworthy since God does not lie. Thus, it is without error in its original manuscripts. It is therefore the standard of our church and the standard for each of us as we live our lives.
